The awkward part of a weight loss injection is rarely the needle. It is the fridge. Around 1.5 million UK adults were using a weight loss injection in March 2025, and roughly 4 million have used one at some point, which means a great many people now pack a temperature sensitive prescription medicine next to the suncream. The rules for doing that are not complicated, but they are specific, and almost every way a trip goes wrong is avoidable: a pen in the hold, a pen in a hot car, a dose missed somewhere over the Atlantic.
Here is what actually matters when you travel with Mounjaro, Wegovy or any other GLP-1 medication, in the order you will need it.
Hand luggage, every time
Your medication goes in the cabin with you, never in the hold. Two reasons. The first is mundane: delayed and misrouted bags are common, and a pen you cannot reach is a pen you do not have. The second is temperature. Hold conditions are not controlled for medicines, and freezing is not a recoverable event for a GLP-1 pen. Both the Mounjaro and Wegovy leaflets say the same thing in almost the same words: do not freeze, and do not use a pen that has been frozen.
UK airport rules are accommodating here. Essential medicines are allowed in hand luggage, including in quantities above the usual 100ml liquid limit, and hypodermic syringes and essential medical equipment are permitted too. Documentation, a letter from your doctor or a copy of your prescription, is formally required when a medicine is both liquid and in a container larger than 100ml. An injection pen is nowhere near that volume, so the rule does not strictly apply, but carry a copy of your prescription anyway. It costs nothing, it settles any question at the security desk, and it is useful if you need to speak to a pharmacist abroad.
Two habits worth adopting: declare the medication when you reach the security point rather than letting it appear unannounced in the tray, and keep pens in their original carton, which carries the drug name, dose and batch number. Pack more needles than you think you need, and if you are travelling with someone, split the pens between two bags.
Keeping the pen between 2 and 30 degrees
Unopened pens belong in a fridge at 2 to 8 degrees. Once a pen is in use, both products give you a generous window away from refrigeration, which is what makes ordinary holidays perfectly manageable.
A Mounjaro KwikPen can be stored unrefrigerated at no more than 30 degrees for up to 30 days after first use, after which the pen must be discarded. A Wegovy pen can be kept for six weeks below 30 degrees, or in the fridge, with the cap on to protect it from light. A fortnight in Spain sits comfortably inside both windows, so for most trips you do not need a hotel fridge at all. You need to respect the ceiling.
That ceiling is where people come unstuck. Thirty degrees is not a high bar in a Mediterranean August. A parked car, a boot, a beach bag, a windowsill in an unairconditioned room and a poolside lounger all pass it easily. An insulated case with a gel pack solves it, provided the pen is wrapped so it never sits in direct contact with the ice.
The opposite mistake is just as expensive. Hotel minibars and small hotel fridges often run far colder than a domestic fridge and have a habit of freezing anything pressed against the cooling element, which is exactly why the Wegovy leaflet tells you to keep the pen away from it. If you are in any doubt about how cold that little fridge gets, keep the pen at room temperature instead and let the in-use window do its job.
Time zones and your injection day
Weekly injections are more forgiving than people expect, because what matters is the interval between doses, not the local clock. If you normally inject on a Tuesday, keep injecting on a Tuesday, and set a phone alarm on UK time so a lost afternoon does not become a lost dose.
If the trip itself makes your usual day impractical, you are allowed to move it. Both Mounjaro and Wegovy permit a change of dosing day as long as at least three days have passed since your last injection. Make that change deliberately before you fly rather than improvising at a departure gate, then continue weekly from the new day.
Missed doses have their own rules, and they differ by drug. With Mounjaro, a dose that is four days late or less can be taken as soon as you remember, and one that is later than that should be skipped. With Wegovy the window is five days. In both cases you never double up to compensate.
Daily formats need more planning than weekly ones. Saxenda is a daily injection, and the semaglutide tablet the MHRA approved in June 2026 has to be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water after a fast, with nothing to eat or drink for a period afterwards. That is simple at home and considerably less simple on a 6am transfer or at an all inclusive breakfast. If you are weighing the Wegovy pill against the injection, travel is a fair thing to factor in: the tablet removes the fridge problem entirely and replaces it with a timing one.
Eating, drinking and feeling human on the move
GLP-1 medications work partly by slowing the rate at which your stomach empties, which is why a large or rich meal sits heavily and why nausea is the most common side effect of the class. Roughly 31 percent of people report nausea at the top 15mg dose of Mounjaro, and in the pivotal Wegovy trial around 44 percent experienced it at some point, usually during dose escalation rather than on a settled dose.
That points to the single most useful piece of planning advice in this article: if you have a dose increase due in the week before a big trip, it is worth asking your prescriber whether it can wait. Travel days already involve odd meal times, dehydration and unfamiliar food. Stacking a titration step on top is how a good holiday becomes a bad one.
Beyond that, the practical rules are unglamorous and they work. Eat smaller meals more often rather than one large one. Favour lean protein, cooked vegetables and whole grains over fried and heavily processed food. Go carefully with alcohol, which compounds both nausea and dehydration. Drink more water than you think you need, because appetite suppression tends to blunt thirst as well as hunger, and cabin air is drying to begin with.
Protein deserves a specific mention. Around a quarter of the weight lost on these drugs is lean mass rather than fat, so two weeks of picking at whatever is convenient is not a neutral event for your body composition. It is one of the reasons resistance training and protein intake are pushed so hard alongside GLP-1 treatment.
Sharps, insurance and what to do if a pen is lost
Take a small travel sharps bin. Used needles should never go loose into a hotel or aircraft bin, and if you need to dispose of one in the air, ask a member of the cabin crew rather than improvising. Check before you fly whether your travel insurance covers the condition you are being treated for and the medication itself, since a declared prescription is usually straightforward and an undeclared one can complicate a claim. Rules on bringing medicines into a country vary, so if your destination is anywhere you are unsure about, check with its embassy before you travel rather than at its border.
If a pen is lost, overheated or frozen, the instinct is to replace it locally. Resist it. The MHRA confiscated nearly 20 million doses of illicitly traded GLP-1 medicines in 2025, and its seizures of falsified or unlicensed weight loss injections climbed from 407 in 2023 to 5,851 in 2025. Contact your own prescriber or pharmacy first and take the advice you are given, even if that means missing a dose. One skipped week is a minor setback. A counterfeit pen is not.
The medicine copes with travel far better than most people assume. What it does not cope with is a car boot, a freezer compartment, or a pharmacy nobody can vouch for.
The pre-flight checklist
- Pens in hand luggage, in their original cartons, never in the hold
- An insulated case and a gel pack, with the pen wrapped so it never touches the ice
- A copy of your prescription, plus spare needles and a small sharps bin
- Alarms set on UK time for your usual injection day
- Any dose increase discussed with your prescriber before, not during, the trip
- Travel insurance that knows about the medication
- A plan for water and protein that survives contact with a buffet
Coming home
There is a particular moment that brings people to a clinic, and it usually arrives about a week after the flight home, when the holiday photographs are on a phone and one area has not changed no matter what the scales have done. That is the honest limitation of every GLP-1 medication: they are superb at reducing total body mass, and they cannot choose where it comes from.
Non-surgical body contouring works the other way round. Fat freezing targets a specific pinchable pocket rather than your weight as a whole, typically reducing fat in the treated area by around 20 to 25 percent, with early changes at about three weeks and the full effect at two to four months. It suits people who are at or near a stable weight, which is why we usually suggest waiting until weight has held steady for a few months rather than treating mid way through a titration. If you want the fuller picture, our comparison of fat freezing and Mounjaro sets out what each one can and cannot do, and what results to expect from fat freezing covers the realistic timeline.
Travel well, keep the pen under 30 degrees, and if it is one stubborn area rather than the number on the scales that is bothering you when you get back, a consultation and a free assessment are the sensible next step.
Taking a GLP-1 injection abroad: the honest balance
Pros
- Both pens tolerate a long spell out of the fridge, so a normal holiday needs nothing more specialist than an insulated bag and a gel pack
- UK airport rules allow essential medicines and hypodermic syringes in hand luggage, and cooling gel packs are permitted too
- The weekly injection day can be moved around a flight, as long as at least three days have passed since your last dose
Cons
- Once a pen is in use its clock is running: 30 days for a Mounjaro KwikPen, six weeks for Wegovy, and a pen that overheats or freezes has to be thrown away
- Delayed stomach emptying makes rich food, alcohol and long travel days harder to tolerate, and nausea is at its worst in the weeks after a dose increase
- Replacing a ruined or lost pen abroad is genuinely risky, because counterfeit GLP-1 injections are now widespread
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take Mounjaro or Wegovy in my hand luggage?
Yes, and you should. UK airport rules allow essential medicines in hand luggage, including quantities over 100ml, along with hypodermic syringes and medical equipment needed for your journey. A pen holds far less than 100ml, so the documentation rule for large liquid containers does not really bite, but it is still worth carrying a copy of your prescription. Declare the medication at the security point, and expect medical items to be screened separately.
Does my pen have to stay in the fridge while I am away?
Not once it is in use. Unopened pens live in the fridge at 2 to 8 degrees. After first use, a Mounjaro KwikPen can be kept unrefrigerated at no more than 30 degrees for up to 30 days and must then be discarded, and a Wegovy pen can be kept for six weeks below 30 degrees or in a fridge, with the cap on to protect it from light. Neither should ever be frozen, and a pen that has frozen must not be used.
How do I handle my injection day across time zones?
For a weekly injection, consistency of day matters more than the exact hour, so most people simply keep their usual day and set a phone alarm on UK time. If a flight makes that awkward, both Mounjaro and Wegovy allow you to move to a new dosing day provided at least three days have passed since your last injection. Once you have chosen the new day, carry on weekly from there.
What if I miss a dose while I am travelling?
With Mounjaro, if it has been four days or less since the dose was due, take it as soon as you remember, then return to your usual day. If it has been more than four days, skip it. With Wegovy the window is five days. Never take two doses to make up for a missed one, and speak to your pharmacist or prescriber if you are unsure rather than guessing.
Should I buy a replacement pen abroad if mine is ruined?
It is much safer to contact your UK prescriber or pharmacy first, even if that means missing a dose. The counterfeit market for weight loss injections is substantial: the MHRA confiscated nearly 20 million doses of illicitly traded GLP-1 medicines in 2025, and seizures of falsified or unlicensed weight loss injections rose from 407 in 2023 to 5,851 in 2025. An unfamiliar pharmacy, a website or a social media seller is not a risk worth taking for one week's dose.
